Day 7 Gretna to Moffat

Hello again B road fans.

Well to day has been a mixture of the weather. Rain and shine really does cover it.

Here is the link to the Route Video

We started the day in the caravan. After a good nights sleep and our usual porridge breakfast we put the bikes on the car in good spirits.
Lovely day

One seriously packed car.
The drive back to Gretna was over quickly (just over an hour) and we were unpacking the bikes. We also had to unpack the car as the bike rack goes on the floor of the boot.
Unpacked and ready to move

Weather still good
We set off and quickly ate up the first few miles
The weather held and the going was good except for the strong headwind. This began to drag after a few miles
Long straight roads

Still sunny but strong headwind

Selfie of the day :-)

We were on the same road for almost the whole day and it did get very boring.
We had arranged to meet Alex at Lockerbie for lunch but we got there faster than he had expected and so we carried on until he caught us up. While we were stopped texting Alex we met a gent called Charlie who was on the Lands end to John o'groats challenge. (for his third time). Charlie would expect to do around 60 miles a day over 14 days and was staying in hostels on route. The next being in New Lanark
Some people can just keep going

Soon after meeting Charlie we stopped for lunch with Alex.
Lunch stop in a lay-by

Still clear roads
Alex had been to the "Devils Porridge" museum just outside Gretna. This turned out to be a very interesting place.
Turns out this used to be the biggest cordite production facility in the world during the first world war and the "Devils Porridge" was the mixture of Nitric Acid + Glycerine + Cotton. This mixture was the propellant used int he shells produced during the war.

After lunch we only had 13 miles left to cover and we soon knocked those off.
2 miles short of the campsite we stopped to shelter from a heavy rain shower under a very interesting road side sign

The cycle paths were excellent today
The rain just got heavier and heavier so we moved to a bridge under the M74

When the rain eventually stopped we made it the last mile and a half to the campsite and got the tents up double quick before the next shower which came soon after.

Dinner today was a few pints of beer chased down by a very good Pizza,

Lockerbie Campsite. Nice place. Just a bit damp

Well it has not been a particularly inspiring day but we can not have them every day.
Tomorrow we will be cycling from Moffat to Biggar. Which starts with a 5 mile climb out of the town.

Thanks for reading
